About the game
Aquatica casts players as rulers of underwater kingdoms, competing to capture locations, recruit characters, and complete goals beneath the waves. Cards drive nearly everything: playing them from your hand grants unique actions that can be chained together, letting a strong turn snowball into up to ten actions in a row. A distinctive three-layered player board and a 'card-rising' mechanism track your growing kingdom in a tactile, visual way. It supports solo play as well as groups of up to four, giving it flexibility as a deep-but-approachable engine builder. The nautical fantasy theme and mysterious sea creatures give it a distinct identity in a crowded genre.
Hobbli's Notes
Aquatica is a hidden gem for players who love engine-building card games but want something with a fresh visual hook. The layered player board and card-rising mechanism genuinely change how the game feels compared to typical deck-builders. It rewards planning out combos across a hand of cards, which scratches that same itch as bigger engine-builders in a tighter package. We'd love to see it get more attention, since it's less well-known than it deserves.
