About the game
Coloma sends players to the California Gold Rush boomtown of 1848, prospecting for gold and recruiting workers, horses, and businesses along the riverways. Each chapter begins with simultaneous action selection, where choosing the same action as too many rivals triggers a "Bust" that disables bonuses. Players rotate sections of the modular board between chapters, and rounds culminate in escalating shootouts against growing bands of outlaws. With multiple paths to victory through town cards and bridge tiles, Coloma blends worker placement, resource management, and engine-building into a tense Old West race.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli finds Coloma's simultaneous-selection-meets-worker-placement structure genuinely inventive, and the periodic shootouts add a nice jolt of drama to an otherwise cerebral Euro. It scales impressively from solo to six players. It asks for a bit more patience with downtime at higher counts, but the payoff is a rich, replayable strategy game.
What we like
- Unique blend of simultaneous action selection and worker placement.
- Escalating shootout mechanic creates dramatic tension.
- Strong solo mode and scalability up to six players.
- Multiple viable strategies via town cards and bridge tiles.
Keep in mind
- Downtime increases noticeably at higher player counts.
- The simultaneous "Bust" mechanic can punish popular choices unpredictably.
- Moderate rules overhead for a worker-placement game.
- Theme may feel thinner than the mechanical depth suggests.
Who it's for
Best for 1-6 players, ages 14+, who enjoy mid-to-heavy Euro strategy games with a Western theme.
