About the game
Fresh Fish is Friedemann Friese's classic city-building auction game about placing market stalls as close as possible to matching delivery trucks. Every stall must keep at least one open path space from its truck, and rival stalls and neutral flea-market tables constantly get in the way of the shortest routes. Players bid at auction to secure prime tile locations, risking a worse spot later if they bid too conservatively. At game's end, the trader with the lowest total path distance (minus saved coins) wins by offering the freshest goods.
Hobbli's Notes
Fresh Fish is a sleeper classic - the auction-then-place structure creates delicious tension as you weigh bidding aggressively now against gambling on a better spot later. Friese's design rewards spatial thinking and reading opponents' intentions in equal measure. It holds up remarkably well decades on and remains one of our favorite mid-weight euro auctions.
What we like
- Clever auction-then-placement structure rewards spatial planning.
- High player interaction through blocking and route denial.
- Proven, well-regarded design from Friedemann Friese.
- Solid replayability from variable board setups.
Keep in mind
- Auction bidding can create some downtime waiting for turns.
- Scoring by lowest total may feel counterintuitive to new players.
Who it's for
Great for 2-5 players aged 12+ who enjoy auction and spatial-placement euro games with moderate complexity.
