About the game

Dungeon Universalis is a sprawling dungeon-crawling system supporting one to six players across multiple game modes, from fully cooperative play to a player-controlled 'Dark Player' antagonist to solo RPG-style campaigns. Its narrative campaign spans many quests, and the system is flexible enough to let groups design and run their own missions using its rulebook, cards, and mechanics. Characters gain experience and improve their skills as the party progresses through Aughmoore's ruined, monster-infested world. With action-point movement, modular boards, and variable player powers, it aims to be a complete toolkit for tabletop dungeon adventures. It's a heavyweight, highly customizable fantasy adventure experience.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a genuinely ambitious dungeon-crawler toolkit: the sheer number of game modes and the option to design your own quests is impressive. That flexibility comes at the cost of a very steep complexity rating and long playtimes, so it demands real commitment from your group. We'd recommend it to dedicated dungeon-crawl fans rather than casual players dipping a toe in the genre.

What we like

  • Massive narrative campaign with flexible game modes.
  • Highly customizable, allowing groups to design their own quests.
  • Deep RPG-like character progression.
  • Works for both solo play and large groups.

Keep in mind

  • Very high complexity and long playtime require major commitment.
  • Significant downtime, especially with more players.
  • Steep learning curve for new dungeon crawler players.
  • Extensive component and rules overhead.

Who it's for

Best for committed fantasy adventure gamers ages 12 and up ready for long, complex campaign sessions, solo or in groups up to six.
