About the game
Manhattan is a classic area-control game where players compete to build the tallest skyscrapers across the city blocks of Manhattan Island. Each turn you play a card indicating where, relative to your seat at the table, you may place a building floor, with the player who tops a building controlling it. Districts are scored round by round based on who controls the most buildings in each neighborhood. It's a simple, spatial, family-friendly design from designer Andreas Seyfarth that has remained a beloved classic since 1994.
Hobbli's Notes
Manhattan is a wonderfully clean example of area-majority design; the relative-position card mechanic is a clever twist that keeps every seat at the table meaningfully different. It's aged remarkably well as a light-to-medium family strategy game. Downtime can be a touch higher with four players since everyone is affecting the same shared city blocks. A great gateway game for introducing area control mechanics.
