About the game

A tile-placement settlement game for 2-4 players where mayoral rivals develop land along a winding river, gathering resources and constructing buildings to create the most impressive pioneer town. As workers settle permanently along the river, remaining workers must take on more of the workload, adding a clever attrition twist to standard worker-placement play. Turn order and contracts further shape each player's development strategy. At the end, the player with the most impressive settlement wins.

Hobbli's Notes

The River offers a streamlined, fast-playing take on tile placement and worker placement, with a neat mechanical hook: as your workers settle down, you have fewer active workers to use. This creates a satisfying tension between expansion and efficiency. At 45 minutes and moderate complexity, it's an accessible strategy game that doesn't overstay its welcome. A good choice for groups who like development games without heavy rules overhead.

What we like

  • Innovative shrinking-workforce mechanic adds strategic tension.
  • Accessible 45-minute playtime and moderate complexity.
  • Charming pioneer/settlement theme with attractive art.
  • Good for groups new to worker-placement games.

Keep in mind

  • Moderate downtime (C grade) can slow the pace at higher player counts.
  • Relatively simple compared to heavier development games.
  • Limited player count (max 4) restricts group size.
