About the game
Alhambra has players acquiring and placing buildings to construct their own Alhambra complex in medieval Granada. Money comes in four currencies, and players buy buildings from a shared market, sometimes earning a bonus turn by paying the exact price. Buildings must be arranged carefully to maximize adjacency and wall length, since players score for having the most buildings of each type and the longest connected outer wall. Play continues through several scoring rounds until the building market can no longer be replenished.
Hobbli's Notes
Alhambra is a modern gateway classic that earned its Spiel des Jahres win through simple, elegant rules hiding real tactical depth in currency management. The 'exact change' bonus turn is a small but brilliant touch that rewards planning ahead. It's colorful, quick to teach, and works beautifully as an introduction to tile-laying euro games.
