About the game

Rise of Tribes is a light-to-medium civilization game where players guide a prehistoric tribe as they grow, move, gather resources, and lead their people across a modular hex board. Each turn you roll dice and choose two of four actions, racing to build villages and complete achievement goals before your rivals. Area control and light conflict resolve as tribes compete for limited hex space, and a variable setup keeps every game fresh. A dedicated solo/co-op expansion adds an invading faction for solitaire play.

Hobbli's Notes

Rise of Tribes hits a nice sweet spot: it's accessible enough for family game night yet has real tactical bite in deciding which two actions to combine each round. The modular board and variable civilization powers keep replay value high without demanding a huge time investment. Some downtime can creep in with four players since dice claiming can be swingy. Still, it's one of the better lighter civ-building games available.

What we like

  • Modular board and variable tribe powers boost replayability.
  • Accessible rules make it a good gateway into civilization games.
  • Multiple viable paths to victory (villages vs. goal cards).
  • Solo expansion adds legitimate single-player value.

Keep in mind

  • Dice-based action selection can create luck swings.
  • Downtime can build up in four-player games.
  • Conflict resolution feels light for players wanting deeper combat.
