About the game
Four Against Darkness is a fully solitaire dungeon-delving game that needs nothing but its rulebook, a pencil, two six-sided dice, and some grid paper. You choose four adventurers from classic fantasy classes, warrior, wizard, rogue, dwarf, and more, equip them, and explore dungeons generated on the fly through dice rolls and random tables. Every room you enter can bring monsters to fight, resources to manage, treasure to grab, traps to dodge, or quests offered by the very monsters you encounter. Characters can level up and grow more capable over a campaign, though survival is never guaranteed. It's explicitly not a miniatures game or a roleplaying game: just a lean, paper-based dungeon crawl you generate as you go.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team really likes Four Against Darkness as a portable, low-cost way to scratch the dungeon-crawling itch without a table full of miniatures. The procedural generation means no two dungeons play out the same way, and the format travels beautifully: it fits in a bag with just a pencil and some paper. It leans on imagination more than any presented artwork or minis, so it rewards players who enjoy filling in narrative color themselves. It's an easy, low-stakes entry point into solo tabletop gaming.
What we like
- Fully solo dungeon-crawling experience needing only a book, pencil, dice, and paper.
- Extremely portable with no miniatures or board required.
- Procedurally generated dungeons offer strong replayability.
- Character leveling adds a satisfying sense of long-term progression.
- Very low cost of entry compared to typical dungeon-crawl games.
Keep in mind
- Paper-and-pencil presentation lacks the visual flair some crawlers offer.
- Random generation can occasionally produce repetitive room content.
- Requires imagination to fill in the narrative details yourself.
- Primarily a solo experience, with only limited options for others to join in.
Who it's for
Great for solo gamers aged 8+ who enjoy fantasy dungeon-crawling and want a lightweight, highly portable game for travel or downtime.
