About the game

In Viral, each player controls a virus spreading through a human body, placing and moving tokens to claim organs and mutate for Viral Points, all while dodging the ever-present threat of the immune system. Simultaneous card play drives movement and combat, and triggering a crisis in an organ activates the immune system's counterattack against everyone. Deck and bag building lets players customize their virus's mutations over the course of the game. Whoever has the most Viral Points when the event deck runs dry wins this darkly comic battle for infection supremacy.

Hobbli's Notes

Viral has a wonderfully weird premise that turns a body-horror concept into a competitive area-control romp. The simultaneous play keeps the table lively, and the immune system mechanic gives everyone a shared threat to worry about even while attacking each other. The deck and bag mutations add a nice layer of build customization. It's a quirky pick for groups who want something a bit different from typical area-majority games.

What we like

  • Quirky virus theme brings dark comedic appeal to the table.
  • Area-control and simultaneous play keep tension constant.
  • Deck and bag building allow for meaningful mutation strategy.
  • Scales from solo play up to five competitive players.

Keep in mind

  • Some downtime can build between simultaneous resolution steps.
  • The body-horror humor may not land with every group.
  • Catch-the-leader mechanics can feel punishing to a frontrunner.

Who it's for
