About the game

Unconscious Mind casts you as a member of Freud's Wednesday Psychological Society, racing to develop new therapeutic techniques and grow your practice in early-1900s Vienna. Using worker placement combined with multiple interlocking rondels, you'll draft cards, treat clients, and peel back transparent layers on dream cards to unlock abilities and score points. Managing your Insight resources across a multi-level dial and building a cascading engine are central to success. It's a dense, thematic engine-builder that supports solo play.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial take: an ambitious, beautifully produced euro with one of the more original core mechanisms (the layered client cards) we've seen recently. The rondel-plus-worker-placement combo takes real effort to learn, so this is one for players who enjoy puzzling out a rulebook before diving in.

What we like

  • Innovative layered client cards create a satisfying sense of progress.
  • Multiple rondels give players varied strategic pathways.
  • Strong solo mode.
  • Rich theme tied closely to the mechanisms.

Keep in mind

  • High complexity and long playtime limit its audience.
  • Significant rules overhead before the first play.
  • Can suffer from analysis paralysis with many options.

Who it's for

Best for dedicated euro-gamers aged 14+ who enjoy heavy engine-building games; plays well solo or with 2-4 players seeking a long, cerebral session.
