About the game
Above and Below blends village-building with narrative storytelling as players guide villagers to construct homes on the surface and explore mysterious caverns below. Sending villagers into the depths triggers passages read aloud from a book of encounters, with players making choices that shape their fate. Balancing worker placement for resource gathering, construction, and skill-teaching against the risks of underground exploration creates a compelling mix of strategy and adventure. Up to four players build competing villages over the course of the game.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editorial team consistently highlights Above and Below as a stand-out for groups who want storytelling woven directly into a strategy game rather than bolted on. The randomized story book keeps cavern exploration fresh across replays, and Ryan Laukat's signature art style makes it a beautiful game to have on the table.
What we like
- Unique blend of worker placement and storytelling.
- Randomized story encounters boost replayability.
- Beautiful art and thematic presentation.
- Rewards both resource strategy and narrative choices.
Keep in mind
- Longer 90-minute playtime may not suit all groups.
- Reading passages aloud can slow pacing for some tables.
- Luck of story draws can swing outcomes.
