About the game

Sheriff of Nottingham has players acting as merchants trying to smuggle goods, legal or otherwise, past the city gate during Prince John's visit. Each round, one player takes on the role of the Sheriff, who decides whether to wave merchants through or inspect their declared goods for lies. Bluffing, bribery, and negotiation determine who gets their goods to market and who gets caught. After every player has had a turn as the Sheriff, whoever has amassed the most valuable goods wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Sheriff of Nottingham is a wonderfully social bluffing game where the real fun comes from the table talk, bribes, and bald-faced lies between merchants and the Sheriff. It plays best with a boisterous group willing to lean into the negotiation and deception. The simple structure means it scales well socially, though it can sting for players who don't enjoy being called out or confronted directly.

What we like

  • Hilarious bluffing and negotiation create memorable table talk.
  • Simple rules that scale well with a lively social group.
  • Satisfying risk and reward in deciding what to smuggle.
  • Shifting alliances give it strong replayability.

Keep in mind

  • Can feel harsh for players who dislike direct confrontation or lying.
  • Some downtime while waiting for others' turns as Sheriff.
  • Luck of the goods draw affects available strategies.
