About the game

Imperial Settlers casts players as leaders of one of four asymmetric civilizations - Romans, Barbarians, Egyptians, or Japanese - racing to build the strongest empire through card-driven engine building. Over five rounds you'll place buildings, send workers to gather resources, and choose whether to expand peacefully or raid your rivals. Its accessible rules hide surprisingly deep tableau-building strategy, making it a modern classic in the genre. Ignacy Trzewiczek's design rewards clever combos and tight resource management.

Hobbli's Notes

Imperial Settlers remains one of our favorite gateway-to-mid-weight engine builders because every faction plays so differently that the game rarely feels stale. The take-that raiding option adds just enough tension to keep everyone paying attention to the table, not just their own tableau. It scales well from two to four players and even solo. A must-have if you enjoy card-based city building.

What we like

  • Four asymmetric factions each offer a genuinely distinct playstyle.
  • Rewarding engine-building with satisfying combo potential.
  • Solid solo mode extends its shelf life.
  • Quick five-round structure keeps games from dragging.

Keep in mind

  • Take-that mechanics can frustrate players who dislike direct conflict.
  • Faction balance can feel uneven at lower player counts.

Who it's for

Ideal for ages 10 and up, appealing to engine-builder fans and family or casual gaming groups of 2-4 players, including solo players.
