About the game
Ta Yü is an elegant abstract connection game where one side races to link the western and eastern edges of the board while the opposing side aims for north and south. Players draw and place three-outlet tiles onto a large grid, gradually extending their network, but scoring is the product (not the sum) of the spaces reached on each edge, forcing a careful balance between offense on both fronts. Bonus double-scoring points add extra focus to key placements. It's a clean, cerebral tile-laying abstract for 2 or 4 players (in teams).
Hobbli's Notes
Ta Yü is a quietly clever abstract game: the multiplicative scoring twist means you truly can't neglect either side of the board, which elevates it above simpler connection games. Hobbli's team finds it a satisfying quick strategic puzzle, though it's an older, somewhat overlooked title that can be tricky to track down these days. Abstract game fans looking for something with a bit more bite than Hex or Tsuro should seek it out.
What we like
- Elegant tile-laying abstract with straightforward core rules.
- Clever multiplicative scoring rewards balanced dual-edge play.
- Brisk 45-minute playtime.
- Team-based option adds a social variant to the base game.
- Every placement carries genuine offense-versus-defense tension.
Keep in mind
- Purely abstract presentation may not appeal to thematic gamers.
- Limited to exactly 2 or 4 players.
- Can feel dry without a strong strategic mindset at the table.
- Out of print, making copies harder to find.
Who it's for
Best for abstract strategy fans who enjoy connection games, ages 8-10 and up, in groups of 2 or 4 (team play).
