About the game
Theseus: The Dark Orbit throws five asymmetric factions into a deadly conflict aboard a space station in deep space, where only one can survive. Marines rig traps in the corridors, aliens sneak through ventilation ducts, scientists gather intelligence through station technology, and the psychic Greys manipulate their enemies' minds: while a mysterious fifth faction lurks with its own agenda. Using a distinctive mancala-inspired movement system, every move you make alters your opponents' movement options, forcing constant tactical recalculation. Players can also customize the station itself by installing traps and secret passages, ensuring no two games play out the same way.
Hobbli's Notes
The mancala-based movement system is a genuinely inventive twist that makes positioning feel like a puzzle in constant flux. Each faction plays wildly differently, giving the game strong asymmetric replay value, and the team mode adds a great option for larger groups. It's a fiddly, idiosyncratic design that rewards players willing to learn its unusual rhythms.
What we like
- The mancala-inspired movement mechanism is unique and genuinely strategic.
- Five asymmetric factions each offer a distinct playstyle and win condition.
- Installable traps and passages ensure high replayability from game to game.
- Team-based rules add a compelling option for larger groups.
Keep in mind
- The unusual movement system has a real learning curve for new players.
- Faction balance among five very different powers can be tricky to judge.
- Component-heavy setup can slow down the start of a session.
Who it's for
