About the game
Mare Nostrum casts three to five players as leaders of ancient Mediterranean civilizations, building power through commerce, construction, and expansion. Players trade rare commodities, build cities and wonders, dispatch caravans, and use dice-driven armies and navies to seize territory or hire great leaders for extra advantage. Controlling four Wonders and/or Leaders, or building the Pyramids first, secures victory. Despite its epic scope, the design is famously streamlined, with rules that fit in just a couple of pages. Games run about two hours and reward balancing diplomacy, trade, and military expansion.
Hobbli's Notes
Mare Nostrum is remarkably elegant for a game with this much ambition: Serge Laget manages to pack a full civilization arc into rules you can teach in minutes. The multiple paths to victory keep the game from favoring any single strategy too heavily. It does demand a real time commitment and can run long with a full table, but the payoff for strategy-loving groups is substantial.
