About the game

Okiya, also known as Niya, is a fast two-player abstract game about arranging tokens to earn the favor of the emperor. A 4x4 grid of tiles, each showing a type of vegetation and a poetic symbol, is set up at the start, and players alternate placing tokens on tiles that match the vegetation or symbol of the previously removed tile. The first player to form a line of four tokens, a 2x2 square, or to leave their opponent with no valid placement wins the round. With matches played as single games, best-of-three series, or point-based races to ten, Okiya is a quick, elegant abstract duel.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team appreciates Okiya's elegant simplicity -- the constrained tile-matching placement creates real tactical tension despite the minimal components. Ten-minute rounds make it easy to play several matches in a row, and the point-based match format adds a nice competitive structure for regular opponents. It's the kind of clean, portable abstract game that rewards spatial thinking without a steep learning curve. A great choice for two players who enjoy quick, cerebral head-to-head duels.

What we like

  • Elegant, simple rules with real tactical depth.
  • Very quick ten-minute rounds allow multiple rematches.
  • Portable, minimal components make it easy to bring anywhere.
  • Multiple match formats add variety for regular opponents.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two-player, so it won't work for larger groups.
  • Abstract theme may not appeal to narrative-focused players.
  • Limited variety once the core pattern becomes familiar.

Who it's for

Ideal for two players aged 7+ who enjoy quick abstract strategy games; great for a fast head-to-head duel.
