About the game

Agents of SMERSH is a cooperative storytelling game that drops one to four players into an alternate 1970s Cold War as UN Secret Service spies battling a newly independent SMERSH organization. Players move across the board, triggering encounters resolved either through the massive Encounter Book, offering over 1500 written scenarios with a reaction matrix, or through simpler, faster Encounter Cards. Custom dice determine success or failure as agents navigate James Bond-style gadgets, guns, cars, and pop-culture references sprinkled with humor throughout. Working together, the team must complete their mission before SMERSH's schemes come to fruition.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a pulpy, spy-thriller storytelling game with an enormous well of content thanks to its Encounter Book, giving it far more longevity than most narrative co-ops. The flexibility to play with the deeper book or the streamlined cards makes it adaptable to how much time your table wants to invest. It's a fun, tongue-in-cheek co-op for groups who enjoy retro Cold War espionage flavor over hard strategic optimization.

What we like

  • Massive Encounter Book offers huge replayability with 1500+ scenarios.
  • Flexible play modes let groups choose depth versus speed.
  • Pulpy Cold War spy theme is packed with humor and personality.
  • Scales well from solo play up to four players.

Keep in mind

  • Heavy reliance on reading encounter text can slow the pace.
  • Retro spy pastiche tone won't appeal to every group.
  • Dice-based success and failure adds variance to narrative outcomes.

Who it's for

Good for cooperative storytelling fans aged 12 to 13 and up, playable solo or in groups up to four, who enjoy Cold War spy themes and narrative-driven play.
