About the game
Rommel in the Desert is a classic two-player wargame recreating the North Africa campaign of World War II, prized for using the Columbia Games wooden block system to hide unit strength and type from the opposing player. Rather than trading combat factors in predictable slugfests, both sides must maneuver, manage a card-driven supply line, and strike with speed and surprise, echoing the real desert war between Rommel and the Allies. The game ships with a large map, 100 wooden blocks, and supply cards that dictate the tense back-and-forth of the campaign. It has been played and admired by wargamers for decades.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a genuine classic of the hobby, and the block system's built-in fog of war is still one of the smartest, simplest solutions to hidden information in wargaming. The eight-hour playtime and top-tier complexity mean it demands a serious commitment from two dedicated players, but for that audience it's considered one of the finest desert-war simulations ever made. It rewards patience, bluffing, and a real feel for operational-level maneuver.
What we like
- Innovative block system creates authentic fog of war without hidden-info bookkeeping.
- Decades of acclaim as one of the best desert-campaign wargames.
- Rewards maneuver, supply management, and psychological bluffing over dice luck.
- High replayability thanks to the open-ended campaign structure.
Keep in mind
- Very long playtime of roughly eight hours per session.
- High rules complexity is a steep barrier for newcomers.
- Requires a large table and a committed, similarly experienced opponent.
Who it's for
Best for experienced wargamers age 12+ willing to commit a full, dedicated session with one opponent.
