About the game
Ascension: Return of the Fallen is a 65-card set for the Ascension deck-building game, playable as a standalone 2-player game or combined with the base Ascension for up to six players. Players recruit Heroes and Constructs or defeat Monsters from a shared Center Deck to earn Honor, culminating in a final battle against the god Samael. A new Fate mechanic can flip the game with a single card. It offers fast, combat-focused deckbuilding without the hassle of shuffling a personal deck each round.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli sees this as a solid, fast-playing entry point into deckbuilding, especially valuable as a genuine 2-player standalone option. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it delivers quick, satisfying rounds.
What we like
- Fast-paced deckbuilding with minimal downtime.
- Works well as a true standalone 2-player game.
- New Fate mechanic adds unpredictable swings.
- Combines with base Ascension for larger group play.
Keep in mind
- Randomness of the Center Deck draw affects strategy availability.
- Thematic depth is thin compared to gameplay depth.
- Best appreciated with some familiarity with the base Ascension game.
Who it's for
Good for deckbuilder fans wanting a quick 1-2 player game, teens and adults looking for a 30-minute strategy fix.
