About the game

Ascension: Deckbuilding Game has players spending Runes to acquire increasingly powerful cards from a shared, ever-shifting central row rather than building fixed decks in advance. Each purchase or monster defeat earns Honor Points, and the game rewards players who can adapt their strategy as the available cards constantly change. Starting from a small identical deck, players race to build the most efficient engine before the game ends. Designed by Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour champions, it was one of the earliest deckbuilders to challenge Dominion's dominance of the genre.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team still enjoys Ascension for how directly it rewards reading the shifting central row rather than following a fixed plan from the start. Its thirty-minute playtime and simple core loop make it easy to get through several games in one sitting. The relatively generic fantasy theme won't wow players looking for strong narrative flavor, and the game can feel a bit solitaire-ish since direct interaction is limited. Still, as a lean, replayable deckbuilder with a huge line of expansions, it remains a solid pick.

What we like

  • Fast-paced deckbuilding with an ever-changing central row of cards.
  • Quick setup and thirty-minute playtime suit repeat sessions.
  • Strong solo mode alongside standard multiplayer play.
  • Extensive line of expansions adds long-term variety.

Keep in mind

  • Dynamic central row can create swingy availability of powerful cards.
  • Less direct player interaction than combat-focused deckbuilders.
  • Fantasy theme is fairly generic and interchangeable with other games.

Who it's for

Good for teens and adults (10+) in groups of 1-4 who enjoy fast-paced deckbuilding games with a shifting shared market.
