About the game

Ambush! is a pioneering solitaire wargame that puts one player in command of an American squad navigating missions against a hidden, ever-changing German foe in WWII France. Using a programmed-paragraph system, soldiers move freely across a mission map, triggering events and combat as they go. Each squad member has ratings for command, perception, weapons skill, and more, adding personality to every soldier. Eight missions provide plenty of variety for solo campaigns.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors consider this a landmark in solitaire wargame design, one that set the template for programmed-paragraph systems still used today. Its variable events and hidden-enemy mechanics create real tension despite playing alone. The bookkeeping and presentation feel dated compared to modern releases, but the design underneath remains sharp. A must-try for solo wargaming enthusiasts.

What we like

  • Pioneering programmed-paragraph solitaire system.
  • Deep tactical WWII simulation at the squad level.
  • High replayability through variable triggered events.
  • Immersive storytelling driven by individual soldier stats.

Keep in mind

  • Solo-only design with no multiplayer option.
  • Dated presentation and heavy manual bookkeeping.
  • Steep learning curve for newcomers to wargames.

Who it's for

Best for solo wargamers and WWII history buffs who enjoy deep, book-driven tactical simulation over long individual sessions.
