About the game
Gears of War: The Board Game brings the cover-based third-person shooter to the tabletop as a cooperative mission game for one to four COG soldiers battling the Locust Horde. Players complete one of seven randomized mission types using dice-based combat, hand management, and modular board tiles that recreate the video game's ruined cityscapes. Variable player powers let each soldier specialize in different combat roles. It's a lengthy, tactical co-op experience built for fans of the source material.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team finds this a solid cooperative adaptation that captures Gears of War's cover-and-charge combat rhythm reasonably well on cardboard. The modular mission structure keeps replayability decent for a licensed game. At three hours, it's a serious sit, and the theme will appeal most strongly to existing fans of the video games. Solo play is supported for those without a full squad.
