About the game

Big Shot is a classic Alex Randolph auction game in which players bid on colored cubes revealed by a die roll each round, then place them on a shared board to claim territory. Once an area fills with seven cubes it locks, and whoever holds the majority owns it - except ties are broken in a delightfully perverse way, sometimes handing the win to whoever has the fewest cubes. Players can take on limited loans to fund bigger bids, but must repay them before final scoring. It's a sharp, thinky auction game about reading the board and your opponents' wallets.

Hobbli's Notes

Big Shot is an underrated gem from a legendary designer - the tie-breaking twist alone generates constant table talk and second-guessing. Bidding with borrowed money adds a nice risk layer that keeps every auction meaningful. It's compact and quick, making it an easy recommendation for groups who enjoy auction games with a devious streak.

What we like

  • Clever majority tie-break rule adds constant tension.
  • Loan mechanic adds meaningful risk to every auction.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime with high replayability.
  • Simple rules hide surprisingly deep bidding strategy.

Keep in mind

  • Auction-heavy design may not appeal to players who dislike direct bidding conflict.
  • Some downtime while waiting for others' bids.
