About the game
Modern Art is a classic auction game from Reiner Knizia in which players act as both dealer and buyer in a booming art market. On your turn you put a painting from your hand up for auction, using one of several auction formats, and either collect the winning bid or pay it yourself if you buy your own piece. After each of four rounds, paintings gain value based on how many of that artist's works sold, and the player with the most cash at the end wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Modern Art is a sharp, elegant classic that still holds up brilliantly decades after release. Reading the market and your opponents matters just as much as the cards you hold, making every auction round genuinely tense.
What we like
- Elegant, tight auction mechanics that reward market reading.
- Quick playtime of around 45 minutes.
- Rewards timing and understanding of opponents' hands.
- A true classic with lasting replayability.
