About the game

Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery lets players lead a colonial power seeking fame and riches in the New World across three ages. Through worker placement, players launch expeditions, colonize regions, expand merchant fleets, and construct capitol buildings that grant unique national advantages. Economic development and, when needed, warfare shape each empire's rise. Designed by Glenn Drover and licensed from the video game, it supports 2 to 5 players (expandable to 6). Sessions run about two hours for a substantial, thematic euro experience.

Hobbli's Notes

An underrated heavy euro that deserves more attention. The worker-placement engine feels satisfying to build up over three ages, though it demands real time investment from your group.

What we like

  • Deep, satisfying worker-placement strategy across three ages.
  • Rich colonial exploration theme with real strategic tension.
  • Scales up to larger groups with the 6-player expansion.
  • Rewarding long-term engine building for patient players.

Keep in mind

  • A two-hour playtime is a big ask for casual groups.
  • High complexity may deter players new to heavy euros.
  • Out of print, making it harder to find a copy.
