About the game

Up Front is a groundbreaking WWII infantry combat card game that ditches hexes and boards in favor of Terrain cards and Action cards representing the chaos of the battlefield. Two players command squads of American, German, or Russian troops, maneuvering and firing across constantly shifting terrain within a lunch-hour timeframe. The system captures the fear, confusion, and unpredictability of small-unit combat far more viscerally than typical hex-and-counter wargames. Extensive optional rules for tanks, snipers, minefields, and more allow for endless design-your-own scenarios.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team has long admired Up Front as one of the most innovative wargame designs of its era, simulating the fog of war in a way that traditional systems rarely achieve. It's compact enough to finish in under an hour despite its depth, which is a rare combination in the wargaming space. That said, its 1983 presentation and dense rulebook will feel dated to players used to modern conflict simulations. It remains a cult favorite among serious wargame collectors.

What we like

  • Innovative cardless design captures battlefield chaos and fog of war.
  • Plays in about an hour despite significant tactical depth.
  • Extensive optional units and scenarios support near-endless variety.
  • Realistic simulation of small-unit WWII infantry combat.

Keep in mind

  • Dated components and presentation compared to modern wargames.
  • Steep learning curve for players new to wargaming conventions.
  • Niche appeal limits it mostly to dedicated wargame fans.

Who it's for

Best for wargame enthusiasts aged 12+ playing head-to-head, especially fans of tactical WWII simulations.
