About the game

ZERTZ is a sharp two-player abstract strategy game from the GIPF Project in which players race to capture sets of colored marbles on a shrinking hexagonal board. Turns consist of either jumping marbles Checkers-style to capture them, or placing a marble and removing an empty ring from the board's edge. As rings are removed, the board steadily contracts, forcing tighter and more forced tactical sequences as the game nears its end. Simple rules mask a deep, almost claustrophobic endgame puzzle.

Hobbli's Notes

ZERTZ is a wonderfully elegant abstract: the shrinking board is a brilliant twist that makes the endgame feel completely different from the opening, with forced jumps creating genuine tactical traps. It's the kind of game you can teach in five minutes but spend years mastering. A must-try for fans of abstract strategy looking for something beyond chess and Go.

What we like

  • Elegant, minimalist rules that are easy to learn.
  • Shrinking board creates a uniquely tense, evolving endgame.
  • Forced jump rules add sharp tactical depth.
  • Portable and quick to set up for a two-player duel.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two-player only.
  • Abstract theme won't appeal to players wanting story or immersion.
  • Forced moves can occasionally feel punishing to newer players.

Who it's for

Perfect for two players, ages 9+, who enjoy sharp abstract strategy games with deep tactical puzzles.
