About the game

Abalone is a classic abstract strategy game where two players push opposing marbles across a hexagonal board, aiming to shove six enemy marbles off the edge to win. The core tension comes from marble 'weight', a longer connected line of marbles can push a shorter one, but with six possible directions of movement, perfect defense is nearly impossible. Simple to learn yet deeply strategic, it has remained a beloved title since winning the 1988 Concours International de Créateurs de Jeux de Société. The game even supports up to six players with supplemental marble sets.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors consider Abalone a timeless abstract classic; its elegant push-mechanic creates surprising depth from remarkably simple rules. It's quick to teach yet rewards genuine spatial and positional thinking, making it a great two-player staple. Few abstract games balance accessibility and strategic depth as gracefully as this award-winning design.
