About the game

Diplomacy is the classic game of pure negotiation, casting each player as one of the Great Powers of pre-World War I Europe. With no dice and no luck, success depends entirely on your ability to negotiate, form alliances, and issue orders that clash or cooperate with your neighbors each Spring and Autumn. Armies and fleets move, support, or hold based on simple written orders, but the real game happens at the table through conversation, promises, and betrayal. It's a legendary, purely strategic experience for 2-7 players willing to commit to a long, intense session.

Hobbli's Notes

Diplomacy remains one of the most legendary games ever designed precisely because it strips away luck entirely and puts your fate in the hands of negotiation and trust: or the lack of it. Few games generate the kind of real social drama and memorable betrayals this one does. It demands a long time commitment and a group genuinely willing to embrace conflict, but for the right table it's unforgettable.

What we like

  • Legendary negotiation-driven gameplay unlike almost any other game.
  • Completely luck-free, rewarding pure strategic and social skill.
  • Iconic and endlessly replayable due to the human element.
  • Creates genuinely memorable moments of alliance and betrayal.

Keep in mind

  • A very long playtime of up to six hours demands serious commitment.
  • Can create real interpersonal friction between players.
  • Player elimination can leave some players out well before the game ends.
  • Requires a full, engaged group to work well.

Who it's for

Experienced gamers who love negotiation and social strategy; best with a full group of 5-7 committed players for a long session.
