About the game

Shadows over Camelot is a cooperative and semi-cooperative game in which players take on the roles of Knights of the Round Table, working together to complete quests ranging from defeating the Black Knight to seeking the Holy Grail. Completed quests add white swords to the Round Table, while failures pile on black swords and siege engines threatening Camelot itself. On each turn, a knight performs a heroic action to advance the group's cause, but must also trigger one of three evil actions that push Camelot closer to ruin. Lurking beneath the cooperation is the possibility that one knight is secretly a traitor, quietly undermining the party while appearing to help. It's a tense, thematic blend of teamwork and hidden loyalty for 3 to 7 players.

Hobbli's Notes

Shadows over Camelot remains one of the best semi-cooperative games for larger groups, thanks to that constant undercurrent of 'is someone secretly working against us?' The variety of Arthurian quests keeps sessions from feeling repetitive, and the shared white-sword-versus-black-sword tension is a great cooperative hook even without a traitor in play. Like many co-ops, it can occasionally suffer from one player dictating everyone else's moves, so we'd encourage groups to actively guard against that. Overall, a fantastic pick for groups who enjoy a bit of paranoia with their teamwork.

What we like

  • Excellent hidden-traitor tension layered over cooperative play.
  • Variety of thematic Arthurian quests adds replayability.
  • Scales well for larger groups.
  • Rewards communication and deduction.

Keep in mind

  • Cooperative play can suffer from one dominant 'quarterback' player.
  • Traitor mechanic shines less with very small or very large groups.
  • Moderate downtime waiting for other players' turns.

Who it's for

Great for groups of 3 to 7 players ages 10+ who enjoy cooperative questing with a layer of hidden-traitor tension.
