About the game

In the Shadow of the Emperor puts 2-4 players in charge of aristocratic families vying for influence within the Holy Roman Empire. You'll place family members into Elector States, each with its own special power, while accumulating votes toward becoming Emperor yourself. Family members age and die, and action cards are limited, forcing tough tactical choices each round. It's a tense political strategy game of shifting alliances and long-term positioning.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a classic-style Euro with real political bite: every action you take can displace an opponent's influence, creating constant tension at the table. The aging and mortality mechanic for family members adds a clever layer of resource scarcity you don't see in many worker-placement games. Be aware that downtime between turns can run high, so it's best suited to a group that enjoys watching the whole board evolve. A rewarding pick for fans of area-influence and political maneuvering.

What we like

  • Deep political maneuvering with meaningful player interaction.
  • Aging family members create interesting long-term resource decisions.
  • Elector States with unique powers add asymmetric strategy.
  • Rewards careful planning and reading opponents' intentions.

Keep in mind

  • High downtime score means turns can drag, especially with four players.
  • Take-that elements can create tension for conflict-averse players.
  • Dense ruleset requires an experienced group to run smoothly.
