About the game

Magical Athlete is a chaotic racing game where players draft four wacky racers with game-breaking special abilities before each of four races. Rolling a die moves your chosen racer forward, but each racer's unique power can twist the race in unpredictable ways. Races alternate between a mild and a wild side of the board, ending once two racers cross the finish line, typically the only two who score. Designed by Richard Garfield and Takashi Ishida, it's pure comedic chaos meant for repeat play with different racer combinations. It supports 2 to 6 players in about 30 minutes.

Hobbli's Notes

An absolute riot at the table. The wildly unbalanced special powers are clearly part of the joke, and the drafting phase adds just enough strategy to keep things interesting between the laughs.

What we like

  • Hilarious, game-breaking racer abilities keep every race unpredictable.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime suits repeat rounds in one sitting.
  • Easy to teach across a wide range of ages.
  • Drafting racers before each race adds welcome replayability.
  • Supports large groups of up to six players.

Keep in mind

  • Heavy reliance on dice rolling means luck often dominates.
  • Limited strategic depth beyond racer drafting.
  • Some abilities may feel notably stronger than others.
