About the game
Railway Boom transports players to Japan's Meiji-era railway boom, where they take on the role of tycoons building competing rail networks. Through auction/bidding, income generation, and network and route building across Japanese cities, players balance resource management with expansion to earn the most renown. Designed by Hisashi Hayashi and Simone Luciani with artwork from Ian O'Toole, it's a substantial economic train game for 2 to 4 players.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team is excited about the pedigree here: Hayashi and Luciani are proven designers of tight economic engines, and Ian O'Toole's art is always a treat. Railway Boom looks to blend classic route-building strategy with more approachable auction and income mechanics. As a 2025 release we haven't logged extensive table time yet, so treat our read as an educated first impression rather than a verdict.
What we like
- Strong designer pedigree in economic and route-building games.
- Combines auction, income, and network-building for layered strategy.
- Rich Japanese railway theme with high production values.
- High player interaction through bidding and turn order.
Keep in mind
- High complexity and 2-hour playtime demand a dedicated group.
- As a new release, long-term replay value is still unproven.
- Downtime may be noticeable during auction phases.
Who it's for
Recommended for experienced Euro gamers and train-game fans, ages 14+, in groups of 2-4 who enjoy longer, strategic economic games.
