About the game

Steam has three to six players laying railroad tracks, upgrading towns, and delivering goods across a double-sided map of the northeastern USA or Europe's Rhine and Ruhr region. Each turn balances investing in new track and train upgrades against the income needed to fund a growing rail network. As a refinement of Age of Steam, it keeps the same tense economic decisions while smoothing some of its predecessor's rough edges. Compatible variant maps and expansions extend the game well beyond the base set.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli considers Steam a more approachable gateway into the beloved Age of Steam design lineage, retaining its sharp economic tension around loans and delivery routes. It rewards careful network planning, though the notable downtime at higher player counts means it plays best with an experienced, patient table.

What we like

  • Satisfying network-building and delivery route optimization.
  • Meaningful economic tension from loans and investment.
  • Replayable via double-sided map and available expansions.
  • More approachable than its predecessor Age of Steam.

Keep in mind

  • Notable downtime, especially at higher player counts.
  • Steep learning curve for new players.
  • Can be punishing for early strategic mistakes.
