About the game

Spooktacular drops players into a Halloween movie marathon gone wrong, as classic monsters escape the screen and terrorize a 1980s theater. Each of one to five players controls one of twenty movie monsters with a unique board of special abilities, racing to terrify moviegoers and rack up points before the credits roll. Turns revolve around playing cards, adding guests, moving around the theater, and unleashing your monster's signature powers. The game ends when a player hits 50 points or the ticket supply runs dry, at which point the spookiest monster wins.

Hobbli's Notes

The retro horror-movie theming is a lot of fun and the variable monster boards promise plenty of asymmetric replay value. Because this is a brand-new 2025 release, we don't have a long track record with it yet, but the combination of light rules and colorful monster powers looks like a good fit for casual groups who want something silly and fast. It's the kind of game that should shine at a Halloween-themed game night.

What we like

  • Twenty unique monsters offer strong variability and replay value.
  • Quick 45-minute playtime suits casual game nights.
  • Fun retro 1980s horror-movie theme with lots of character.
  • Easy-to-learn core rules keep the barrier to entry low.

Keep in mind

  • As a newly released title, long-term balance and replay value are still unproven.
  • Card draw luck can influence outcomes as much as strategy.
  • Moderate downtime score suggests some waiting between turns in larger groups.

Who it's for

Great for casual groups and families with teens (age 12+) who enjoy light, thematic games with a horror-comedy twist.
