About the game

Sunrise Lane has players acting as construction companies building up a residential neighborhood one house at a time. On your turn, you either draw colored cards into your hand or discard matching-colored cards to place houses on adjacent grid spaces, scoring points based on the space's value multiplied by houses placed. Reiner Knizia's design rewards chaining multiple builds together in a single turn when you can manage it. The game ends once players run low on house pieces, triggering bonus scoring for height, size, and the longest connected neighborhood.

Hobbli's Notes

This is classic Knizia, simple rules hiding a surprisingly tight spatial puzzle about when to bank cards versus cash them in for a big chained turn. At under an hour and with light complexity, it's an easy one to bring out with less experienced players while still giving veterans something to optimize. The city-building theme is mostly a light coat of paint over the abstract scoring system.

What we like

  • Simple rules with genuine tactical depth from a top designer.
  • Satisfying chaining mechanic rewards clever turn planning.
  • Quick 45-minute playtime suits varied group sizes.
  • Multiple end-game bonus categories add strategic variety.

Keep in mind

  • Light theme feels mostly abstract despite the city-building dressing.
  • Card luck can limit which colors you can build with on a given turn.
  • May feel too simple for players wanting a heavier euro.

Who it's for

Great for families and casual gamers ages 8+ looking for a light-to-medium card and area-building game for 2-4 players.
