About the game

Unmatched: Sun's Origin brings two legendary figures from Japanese history to the battlefield: the tactical master Oda Nobunaga, whose honor guard grows more dangerous the longer combat runs, and the swift, relentless warrior Tomoe Gozen. Using the signature Unmatched system of movement, card-driven combat, and hero-specific decks, players face off in fast, tactical duels on a battle map. Beautiful artwork by Yuta Onoda, backed by cultural consultation, brings the setting to life. Every Unmatched hero is fully compatible with the rest of the growing lineup.

Hobbli's Notes

Unmatched continues to be one of the best asymmetric dueling systems on the market, and Sun's Origin adds two compelling, mechanically distinct heroes to the roster. Nobunaga's escalating honor guard and Tomoe's relentless pursuit both create genuinely different tactical puzzles. Matches are quick enough to want an immediate rematch, especially once you start mixing heroes from other sets. A must-consider for fans of tight, card-driven combat duels.

What we like

  • Fast tactical card-driven combat with distinct asymmetric heroes.
  • Beautifully illustrated artwork and miniatures.
  • Quick 40-minute duels are ideal for repeat play.
  • Fully compatible with the broader Unmatched hero roster.

Keep in mind

  • Limited to two combatants without mixing in expansions.
  • Best variety requires owning other Unmatched sets.
  • The hex-and-card system needs a few plays to fully master.
