About the game

Expeditions sends players into a meteorite-scarred Siberian taiga to uncover ancient corruption, artifacts, and glory, serving as a spiritual sequel to Scythe. Players play cards to build power and guile, move a mech across mysterious locations, and equip workers, items, and quests to strengthen their expedition. It's a competitive, card-driven engine-building game of exploration with an entirely different mechanical toolkit than its predecessor, though it aims for a similarly evocative atmosphere. A solo mode is included alongside support for up to five players. Jakub Rozalski's distinctive art returns to anchor the darker, more supernatural setting.

Hobbli's Notes

Stegmaier and Rozalski capture that unmistakable Scythe mood again without repeating themselves mechanically. The engine-building and exploration loop feels fresh while still scratching that familiar itch.

What we like

  • Rich, atmospheric exploration theme with gorgeous artwork.
  • Deep engine-building keeps decisions interesting round after round.
  • Solid solo mode extends the game's appeal beyond groups.
  • Modular board and variable setup boost long-term replayability.
  • Distinct mechanisms from Scythe give it its own identity.

Keep in mind

  • A 90-minute playtime is a real commitment for casual groups.
  • Moderate-to-high complexity may not suit first-time strategy gamers.
  • Some downtime can build in higher player counts.
