About the game
After Us is set in a far-future Earth where evolved apes lead tribes toward collective intelligence, blending deck-building with a combo-driven card-melding system. Starting with humble tamarins, players combine cards each turn to gather resources and attract more powerful apes, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and mandrills, into their growing tribe. The race to victory points plays out through careful hand and resource management rather than direct conflict. Its striking Vincent Dutrait artwork and post-human premise give it a distinctive, thoughtful tone for a resource-engine game.
Hobbli's Notes
We appreciate the unusual theme here: a hopeful, nature-reclaimed future rather than another post-apocalyptic wasteland. The melding and splaying combo system rewards players who can plan several turns ahead for efficient resource chains. It supports solo play, which is a nice bonus for a game this engine-focused. It's a fairly meaty game that will appeal most to players who already enjoy deck-building and engine-building titles.
What we like
- Distinctive theme and artwork stand out from typical deck-builders.
- Supports solo play alongside up to six players.
- Combo-driven melding system offers satisfying engine-building.
- Multiple viable strategies for attracting different ape types.
Keep in mind
- The combo system may have a learning curve for newer players.
- Simultaneous play can create some analysis paralysis at full player count.
- Less proven track record than more established engine-builders.
Who it's for
Good for engine-building fans aged 12 and up, playable solo or with up to 6 players.
