About the game

Wings of War: Watch Your Back! is the second title in the classic Wings of War line, continuing the World War I aerial combat series. It introduces five new plane models, including the Nieuport 11, Hanriot HD.1, and Halberstadt D.III fighters alongside two-seater bombers, along with new movement and combat card decks. Players plan flight paths using simultaneous movement cards, then resolve dogfights with combat cards, rulers, and counters. It can be played on its own or combined with Wings of War: Famous Aces for larger dogfights. The game recreates thrilling WWI air combat with simple, elegant simultaneous-action mechanics.

Hobbli's Notes

Wings of War (later rebranded Wings of Glory) remains one of the most approachable and satisfying WWI dogfighting games ever made, and Hobbli's team particularly likes how the simultaneous movement-card system creates genuine tension without complex rules overhead. Watch Your Back! is a great way to expand the roster of planes and scenarios if you already enjoy the base system. It's an easy recommendation for players who love aviation history and light wargaming.

What we like

  • Combines with Famous Aces for larger, more varied scenarios.

  • Accessible rules make WWI aerial combat easy to learn.

Keep in mind

  • Best experienced as an expansion alongside other Wings of War sets.
  • Historical WWI theme may not appeal to all players.
  • Miniature planes and rulers require careful table space management.
