About the game
Dungeons, Dice & Danger is a roll-and-write dungeon crawler where you journey through dark passages in search of treasure and glory, one dice roll at a time. Designed by Richard Garfield, it supports 1 to 4 players and plays in about 60 minutes using only dice, pencils, and paper. Each roll lets you delve deeper, fight monsters, and collect loot, all recorded directly on your personal sheet. Its light complexity and quick setup make it an easy pickup for both new and experienced gamers, and a full solo mode lets you brave the dungeon alone. It's a fast, fantasy-themed take on the popular roll-and-write genre.
Hobbli's Notes
Garfield's dungeon-crawl reskin of the roll-and-write format brings a satisfying sense of risk and reward to every roll. We like that it needs almost nothing beyond pencils and dice, making it easy to bring anywhere. The solo mode holds up well for players who want to practice their dungeon-delving strategy alone. It's a lighthearted, quick fantasy adventure that's easy to return to again and again.
What we like
- Fun dungeon-crawl theme layered onto an accessible roll-and-write framework.
- Solid solo mode for practicing strategies without a group.
- Quick setup and teardown using only dice, pencils, and paper.
- Designed by veteran designer Richard Garfield with clever dice interactions.
Keep in mind
- Repeated plays on a fixed dungeon layout can start to feel similar.
- Dice luck can meaningfully swing outcomes round to round.
- Limited direct interaction since everyone fills in their own sheet simultaneously.
Who it's for
Great for casual and family gamers aged 12+ who enjoy quick roll-and-write games, playing solo or in groups of up to 4.
