About the game

War of the Ring recreates the epic struggle of The Lord of the Rings, pitting one player's Free Peoples against another's Shadow Armies of Sauron. While armies clash across Middle Earth using an action-dice system, the true heart of the game lies in the secret journey of the Fellowship toward Mount Doom, hunted all the while by Sauron's forces. Victory can come through military conquest or by successfully destroying the One Ring, making every decision a balance between open warfare and hidden strategy.

Hobbli's Notes

War of the Ring is widely regarded as the definitive Lord of the Rings board game, and for good reason. The asymmetric tension between the Fellowship's secret quest and open warfare captures the source material beautifully, and the production values are outstanding.

What we like

  • Masterfully captures the asymmetric tension of the source material.
  • Deep strategic action-dice system rewards careful planning.
  • Strong narrative event cards reinforce the story.
  • Supports team play with multiple players per side.

Keep in mind

  • Long playtime, often two hours or more.
  • Considerable rules overhead for newcomers.
  • Best appreciated by a group already invested in the setting.

Who it's for

Best for experienced wargamers and Lord of the Rings fans ages 12 and up, in groups of two to four, ready for a long, immersive session.
