About the game
Paperback Adventures is a solo-focused deckbuilding word game starring novelist Paige Turner's wild imagination. You'll build a deck of letter cards and spell words each turn, but instead of competing against other players, you use your vocabulary to battle a series of roguelike AI enemies drawn from pulpy genre fiction. Three distinct playable characters offer different strengths and strategies, and additional variants support cooperative play for two. Note that the core box requires a separate Character Box (Ex Machina, Damsel, or Plothook) to actually play.
Hobbli's Notes
A clever evolution of the Paperback/Hardback formula: turning word-building into combat against AI enemies gives solo play real teeth and structure. Just remember you'll need a character box before you can actually play a game.
What we like
- Inventive word-spelling deckbuilder mechanic.
- Strong dedicated solo mode with roguelike enemy design.
- Distinct playable characters add real replay variety.
- Cooperative variant supports two players well.
Keep in mind
- Primarily solo-focused, which limits use for larger groups.
- The core box alone is not a complete game and requires an additional Character Box.
- Spelling-dependent gameplay may not suit every player.
Who it's for
Best for solo gamers and word-game enthusiasts aged 14+, with support for two-player cooperative play as well.
