About the game
Explorers is a solo-friendly paper-and-pencil game from Phil Walker-Harding where players cross off spaces on their personal landscape frame to expand a village's territory. Each turn's exploration card reveals two possible terrains, and players choose which one to trace across three connected squares, with everyone else usually forced to choose the same or a smaller path. Over four rounds, checked-off spaces trigger special actions, provisions, gems, and access to hidden temples that reward whoever gets there first. With modular tile setups and task variants, it offers a huge range of variable starting layouts.
Hobbli's Notes
Explorers is a fantastic light-strategy pick that plays fast but still has satisfying spatial puzzle decisions each round. The shared exploration cards create a nice bit of tension since your path options depend on what the active player reveals. Its low downtime and modular setup make it easy to bring back to the table often. A great gateway into paper-and-pencil games for family groups.
What we like
- Very low downtime thanks to the shared reveal-and-choose structure.
- High replayability from modular tile and task variety.
- Simple rules hide meaningful spatial planning decisions.
- Solo mode included for single-player sessions.
Keep in mind
- Being forced into the other player's terrain choice can feel restrictive.
- Limited direct player interaction beyond the shared card reveal.
- Scoring tiles add a bit of setup complexity for a light game.
Who it's for
Great for families and casual players aged 8 and up, including solo players, looking for a quick spatial puzzle game.
