About the game

The Initiative is a cooperative board game blending storytelling, strategy, and code-breaking as players take on the roles of 1990s teenagers drawn into a mysterious board game called The Key. An interactive comic book weaves together a campaign of chapters, each a self-contained 30-60 minute mission. Every chapter builds on the knowledge and puzzles of the last, whether the team wins or loses. It's a unique fusion of narrative adventure and deduction puzzle-solving for a small group.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli loves how The Initiative folds a genuine comic-book story into cooperative puzzle-solving: it feels more like an interactive graphic novel than a traditional board game. The catch is that it's a finite campaign experience, so once you've solved it, the mystery is done.

What we like

  • Unique integration of an interactive comic book with gameplay.
  • Cooperative code-breaking puzzles reward group communication.
  • Chapters are digestible at 30-60 minutes each.
  • Story continues to advance even after failed missions, reducing frustration.

Keep in mind

  • The campaign is a one-time narrative experience with limited replay value.
  • Requires the full group to commit across multiple chapters to finish the story.
  • Some downtime can occur while the group works through puzzles together.

Who it's for

Great for groups of 1-4 teens and adults who enjoy narrative-driven, puzzle-solving co-op games; ideal for story lovers rather than pure strategists.
