About the game
In Mandala Stones, players guide artists to collect colorful patterned stones and stack them into towers on their personal boards. On your turn, you either gather stones matching your artist's pattern or score by removing towers, converting stacked stones into points based on their height, color variety, or matching conditions. Removed stones are placed onto a shared central mandala, building an ever-growing communal pattern that can trigger bonus scoring as it's covered. With secret objective cards adding a final scoring twist, it's a tactile, colorful abstract puzzle about pattern-building and careful stone management.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a satisfying abstract with a lovely tactile quality: stacking and scoring towers of stones feels great at the table. The shared central mandala adds a nice communal element that's uncommon in pure abstract games. It's a quieter, more cerebral pick, best suited to players who enjoy pattern-optimization puzzles over direct conflict.
What we like
- The tower-stacking scoring mechanism is tactile and visually satisfying.
- The shared central mandala adds communal interaction to an otherwise abstract design.
- Secret objective cards add a hidden scoring layer for added strategy.
- A 30-minute playtime keeps it brisk and replayable.
Keep in mind
- As a quiet abstract game, it offers limited thematic engagement.
- The scoring rules require careful explanation to new players.
- Its niche appeal may not suit groups looking for more interactive or narrative games.
Who it's for
Abstract strategy fans aged 8+ who enjoy pattern-building and set-collection puzzles, for 2-4 players.
