About the game

Hamburg is a Stefan Feld card game in which every card has five different possible uses, challenging players to decide the best application for each one while racing toward personal and public goals. As mayors of 19th-century Hamburg, players roll dice to trigger threats and events, advance on the mayor's track, and play cards to build the city wall, activate boats, or construct buildings that grant new abilities and endgame scoring. Over eight rounds, careful card sequencing and resource timing separate the winning strategy from the rest. It's a reimplementation of Feld's Bruges with added content from its expansions.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team enjoys the multi-use-card puzzle at Hamburg's core; deciding whether to spend a card on money, a building, or wall defense is a classic Feld dilemma that rewards careful planning. As a refinement of Bruges, it should appeal strongly to fans of that design's dice-and-card system. The solo mode is a nice bonus for a game that's equally satisfying at any player count.

What we like

  • Clever multi-use card system creates constant meaningful decisions.
  • Solid solo mode alongside multiplayer.
  • Reimplements and refines the well-regarded Bruges design.
  • Satisfying building and scoring variety across eight rounds.

Keep in mind

  • Multiple simultaneous scoring tracks can feel overwhelming at first.
  • Some luck from dice rolls affecting threats and events.
  • May feel too similar to Bruges for players who already own it.

Who it's for

Great for 1-5 players aged 12+ who enjoy Stefan Feld's multi-use-card puzzles and medium-weight Eurogame planning.
