About the game

Oros casts one to four players as demigods shaping the earth itself, moving Followers around a personal player mat to shift rows of land, collide tiles, form and erupt volcanoes, and build sacred places atop mountains. The shared, ever-shifting landscape becomes a living puzzle, with wisdom gained through worship used to unlock better actions and boost end-game scoring. As players build sacred sites, they climb a shared ziggurat that acts as the game's timer, ending the round and triggering final scoring once someone reaches the top. It's a mythologically themed strategy game built around a genuinely novel land-manipulation mechanic.

Hobbli's Notes

The tile-colliding, mountain-building puzzle at the heart of Oros is one of the more original mechanical ideas we've seen in recent worker-placement design, and the constantly evolving shared board keeps every game feeling different. It's a slower, more cerebral experience than its mythological dressing might suggest, closer to abstract puzzle-solving than narrative adventure. We're less certain about direct comparisons since its core mechanic doesn't map cleanly onto many other games.

What we like

  • Innovative land-shifting puzzle mechanic unlike typical worker placement.
  • Strong solo mode for a game with real strategic depth.
  • Evolving player mat creates a unique strategic path each session.
  • Thematically cohesive mythological framing throughout.

Keep in mind

  • Abstract puzzle nature may feel dry for narrative-focused players.
  • Longer playtime for what is fundamentally a puzzle-centric game.
  • The tile-shifting system carries a real learning curve for first plays.
